Bought as a "fixer upper" as it had lost its mast and been neglected for many years. As I am a wheelchair using quadriplegic (from a hang gliding accident in 1977) who has sailed competively, both at State, National and International levels, we now want a bay cruiser and club racing yacht. We sail the boat mostly around the Mayo coast and islands. When we bought it, it was delivered form Conway (wales) to Howth (east coast of Ireland) and we sailed it back from Howth to Mayo. There is another Eygthene in the Mayo Sailing Club. When we bought ours, there used to be a fleet of seven Eygthenes sailing in Fenit in Ireland, but I don't know if that is still the case. When the earlier owner took over the boat it had run aground and had a sevear keel damage. The result were leakage around the keel bolts. He changed the keel bolts and fixed the keel and now the boat is completely fixed with no leakage. I bought the boat in the winter of 2007. My big task this winter and next spring is to fix the environment inside the boat. The engine has no box around so smells (smoke, oil etc. ) from the engine goes straight to the cabin and also the sounds from the engine are very noisy and load. So the first project is to build a new engine box. Also I world like to improve the environment inside the boat by mounting 2 solar vents. One solar vents in the room in front of the boat and one in the cabin room. When this is ready my plan for the summer 2009 is to sail to the Northern part of Norway to the Lofoten islands. I bought this boat last year in Kristiansund, Norway. She is in a good shape. All sails from Elvstroem, and genoa with Furlex reefing system. I think she sails very good, more than 6 knots. She feels stable and safe. Under motoring she is not so easy to steer. I think the rudder is not ment for a propeller. Nice boat this Eyghtene 24.
